Ecuador

LAN Ecuador is an airline based in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It operates scheduled passenger services from Quito and Guayaquil with aircraft leased from LAN Airlines as required. Its main base is José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport, Guayaquil, with a hub at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, Quito.

Ecuador is about equal in area to state of Nevada in US. It is in the northwest part of South America facing the Pacific. To the north is Colombia and to the east and south is Peru. Two high and parallel ranges of the Andes, traversing the country from north to south, are topped by tall volcanic peaks. The highest is Chimborazo at 20,577 ft (6,272 m).

The tribes in the northern highlands of Ecuador formed the Kingdom of Quito around 1000. It was absorbed, by conquest and marriage, into the Inca Empire. Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro conquered the land in 1532, and throughout the 17th century a Spanish colony thrived by exploitation of the Indians. The first revolt against Spain occurred in 1809. In 1819, Ecuador joined Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama in a confederacy known as Greater Colombia.

Nowhere else on earth will you find so much natural diversity in so tiny place. Ecuador is the second-smallest country in South America, but surprisingly it offers a lot!

Rafael Correa, president of Ecuador

Prime Minister Stephen HarperRafael Correa was officially declared president of Ecuador on December 4 2008, by that nation’s electoral court. He is a 46-year-old economist trained in the United States and Belgium, served briefly as minister of economics under the government of Alfredo Palacios. Correa has been a university professor most of his life.

Correa also called for “neutrality” on Plan Colombia, the US-Colombian program ostensibly aimed at drug interdiction, whose primary purpose is to ensure Colombian oil supplies to US transnational companies. He proposed that Ecuador not renew its lease of the Manta Air Base to the United States. The lease expires in 2009. [read more...]
